To celebrate NAIDOC (National Aboriginal and Islander Day of Observance) week on Palm Island, The Catherine Freeman Foundation (Catherine Freeman and Svea Pitman) helped to celebrate two social events that were organised by Great Big Events. July 9 and 10 the Elders Dinner Ball took place followed the next day by the NAIDOC concert and both events were also supported by Brisbane based organisation STARS (Shaping, Transforming, and Realising Self), and the Palm Island Community Company.

The theme for this years’ NAIDOC week was ‘Honouring our Elders, nurturing our Youth’ and during the Ball and the concert, Palm Islanders and visitors together celebrated local achievement and culture.
Special guests to the Elders Ball were tv legend Ray Martin and Aussie music hero, Angry Anderson.
The NAIDOC concert was hosted by Ray Martin, with Angry being the ‘star attraction’ of the show. Ray and Angry were joined by other musical artists including Beccy Cole, Adam James, William Barton as well as a large number of local artists such as Harriette Murphy, Mick Thaiday and the Dreamkeepers.
The concert organisers also provided fireworks for the island to enjoy as well as video presentations on large outdoor screens highlighting Palm Islands’ rich artistic talents.
We wish to thank and acknowledge, Jennie Lee, Wendy Watego, Vickie Scott, Rachel Atkinson, Palm Island Mayor Alfred Lacey, Coroner Zina Prior, Sergeant Bernie Mead, Ray Martin (and Les), Angry Anderson and his partner Michelle, Beccy Cole, Adam James, and William Barton.
