Oct 8-9, CFF Founder Catherine Freeman, CFF General Manager Carol Ross and CFF Programs Coordinator Svea Pitman spent 2 days on Palm Island and it was particularly significant for Carol as it was her first visit to the island.
The visit proved to be yet again a most fruitful exercise in reiterating CFF’s commitment to the community celebrated also by the presence of two media entities on day two of our visit. The Sunday Mail and Bearcage Production company which was filming for FOXTEL.
Over our two day stay, CFF met with Palm Island Mayor Alf Lacey and Council CEO Barry Moyle.
CFF’s first Community Consultation Group meeting took place which saw 12 interested community leaders present which was an excellent turnout and it was truly inspiring to witness such passion for Palm Island and its future.
In both meetings CFF provided an update and in turn we sought further feedback and criticism regarding our work and its impact.
CFF were invited and attended a Palm Island Education Council meeting as observers of which focussed on Palm Island educational issues priorities and strategies.
Amongst many issues highlighted, CFF learnt of the current 80% of students attending both schools experiencing mild to moderate hearing loss.
From a CFF point of view it indeed was an eye opening experience which aids in our future direction strategically.
CFF Bike Non-truancy presentations saw 19 bikes presented to Palm Island’s school children who displayed leadership aligned with their overall general attitude towards their culture including their schooling.
The bike presentations proved to be a success by uplifting both St Michaels and Bwgcolman Schools.

Lastly, CFF is very excited to report that we have identified a candidate to fill the role as CFF’s After Schools Activity Program Coordinator.
Svea Pitman invited the whole community to step forward to apply, and thankfully CFF flew out of Palm Island with a very high likelihood of a local person working directly with CFF commencing very soon.
CFF wish to thank and acknowledge:
