Our Programs

The Catherine Freeman Foundation is a not-for-profit organisation established in 2007 with the aim of creating pathways to a brighter future for indigenous children. The Catherine Freeman Foundation works in partnership with community organisations, businesses, schools and other philanthropists in facilitating educational opportunities for young indigenous girls.

We have initially chosen the single focus of partnering with the remote indigenous community of Palm Island, 68km south east of Townsville in far north Queensland.

Vision: Young Indigenous Australians enjoy the same well being, strong sense of self-belief and educational opportunities as their peers.

Mission: To create, with partners, a range of pathways to success. Our initial focus will be on Palm Island.

Target: Primary school children and secondary school girls.

Current Catherine Freeman Foundation Projects on Palm Island:
Project 1: Non Truancy Project
The CFF presents mountain bikes to pupils who show the biggest attitudinal change in the following areas: attitude to their peers; behaviour in school; attendance; academic achievement and manners. Over the past two years, the program has resulted in a 20% increase in attendance rates at both local schools and will continue awarding more bikes, as well as Dunlop sneakers as incentives for regular school attendance.

Project 2: After School Activity Program
To sustain this program, CFF is in an agreement with the Australian Government’s Department of Families, Housing, Community Services and Indigenous Affairs (FaHCSIA) through the Townsville Indigenous Coordination Centre (ICC). Our goal is to give Palm children a variety of safe and enjoyable activities, reducing health issues, increase school attendance rates and reduce anti-social behaviour on the Island.
Project 3: Education Scholarships
CFF has announced a new partnership with the Australian Indigenous Education Foundation to provide boarding scholarships for secondary age Palm Island girls in 2010. These enable girls to attend St Columba’s in Charters Towers to gain a quality educational experience.

Project 4: Educational and Aspiration Tours
In partnership with Cottage by the Sea, CFF has been rewarding Palm Island children who have committed to their schooling, an experience designed to expand their horizons. Visiting Victoria and being provided with incredible educational experiences has seen these students grow in self confidence and pride.
